Flow Morpheus Slow

One of the simplest ways to increase your inner resources is to sleep more. It sounds obvious and too easy but it's surprising just how many people simply don't get enough sleep.

This is crazy as it's while you sleep that your body does its repair and house-keeping, which leads on to your renewal and refreshment.

Not enough sleep has been linked to:
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Appetite increase
  • Depression
  • Divorced from reality
  • Exhaustion
  • Fatigue
  • Impaired immune system functioning
  • Lack of physical energy
  • Pessimism
  • Poor driving
  • Poor glucose metabolism which may lead on to diabetes
  • Poor memory
  • Poor speech
  • Rigid attitudes
  • Stress
  • Weight gain

How much sleep do we need?

Well the average figures often quoted are:

  • Age zero to two - 13 to 17 hours sleep a night.
  • Age two to ten - 9 to 13 hours sleep a night.
  • Age ten to sixteen - 10 to 11 hours sleep a night.
  • Age sixteen to sixty-five - 8 to 9 hours sleep a night.
  • Age sixty-five and over - 6 to 8 hours sleep a night.

These might vary quite a bit with your activity level and owing to natural variance.

However, natural variance isn't as large as you think. You may remember a politician from the 1980s who famously only had 3 hours sleep a night and you know what a mad old fruit-cake they turned out to be (although many of us had our suspicions of this at the time).

Fatigue Debt

Most of us have a fatigue debt so what I'm suggesting to you is that for this week you go to sleep one hour earlier than usual every night. Yes that's right get an extra hour's sleep a night and allow your body to catch up. You may have to miss some soap operas or reality TV shows by going to bed earlier but we see this as an added bonus.

Try it for a week and see what difference it makes to you.

Remember through rest comes rest-oration!
