McTimoney Chiropractic

This is a gentle form of chiropractic that treats the whole body. At each consultation the whole body is chiropractically assessed and where a joint is subtly out of alignment ( chiropractically this is called a subluxation ) it is adjusted with a rapid, light, adjustment. By realigning the body in this manner it is possible to restore the correct nervous control to all areas of the body and at the same time ease muscular aches and pains. Most people visit a chiropractor for the treatment of a specific problem e.g. back pain, joint problems, headaches, numbness in the limbs, pins and needles, tennis and golfers elbow , whiplash injuries or simply for maintenance of their general health.

How McTimoney Chiropractic Works

What We Do

McTimoney Chiropractors palpate the bones and the joints of the body to check for incorrect position or imbalance, however slight. Any problems found are corrected with various adjustments which are gentle, safe and effective. McTimoney Chiropractic is a whole body method which aims to correct musculo-skeletal alignment and to restore and maintain nerve function which promotes natural health and wellbeing.

Why We Do It

The human nervous system is responsible for all body functions. The spinal column is composed of twenty four vertebrae and is designed for flexibility, strength and protection. As long as the vertebrae remain in normal alignment these functions are fulfilled. However, vertebral misalignments do occur which interfere with the nerve pathways between the vertebrae. These are called subluxations. If subluxations occur a person can experience localised pain, pain of any description, of any duration, anywhere down the course of that nerve leading to malfunction in either the target muscles, tissues or internal organs.

For example, tingling fingers can often be caused by a subluxation of the neck vertebrae; pain into the toes and down the back of the thigh can be due to compression of the sciatic nerve which comes through the low back and sacral areas. We spend time palpating the pelvic girdle for subluxations as the pelvis is the foundation of the whole skeletal structure. Subluxations here can cause uneven muscle tension and stresses into the lower extremities, into the shoulder girdle and into the spine itself.

If areas of the body are out of balance, they can affect the whole; therefore we assess the whole body at each treatment. The more balanced the structure, the more the body can work at it's optimum.

How We Do It

At your initial consultation a full case history is taken , in order to assess and analyse the problem. The information taken will include details of symptoms, your general health, background, lifestyle, occupation, sports and hobbies. We then explain to you what we're going to do and why we're going to do it. We then palpate and adjust individual bones and joints of the skull, thorax, spine, pelvis and limbs as needed, realigning and rebalancing the entire body.

The bones are never forced into place, but by adjusting with a very rapid thrust and an immediate release the bone toggles towards it's correct position. This is achieved by easing muscle tension and using the natural elasticity of tendons attached to the bone. Because of this, the treatment is relatively gentle and comfortable to receive. Anyone from babies to the elderly can benefit. The neck is aligned by adjusting each of the neck vertebrae individually, so no rotational trauma can be introduced.

Number of Treatments

The number of treatments is initially between two and six weekly, but can vary considerably depending on the person's age, lifestyle, general health and the length of time that they have had the problem. The treatments are then gradually spaced out. Basically we have to re-educate your muscles and bones into a better alignment.

What Causes Subluxations

The skeleton cannot move by itself so muscles, joined to bone by tendons, enable the body to move. Too much muscle tension can cause a bone to move towards the tighter muscle and subluxate. Any action carried out in an unbalanced way - plastering,  vacuuming, tennis, even carrying a heavy school or shoulder bag - can lead to imbalance in the body. Additional causes include: lifting, falls, accidents, illness, operations, childbirth, occupational hazards, sports injuries, emotional or physical stress, bad posture, and even a poor mattress. Some causes are so subtle that often changes can occur without the person's knowledge. We can give advice to help you avoid similar problems in the future.

Who Can Benefit

We treat people with:- pain, discomfort and stiffness relating to the joints and bones, including the back, neck and shoulders; muscular aches and pains; most sports injuries including tennis/golfer's elbow, knee and ankle problems; headaches, migraines and whiplash; sciatica, trapped nerves, tingling and numbness; stress related problems. Basically people with any ailment that has been caused by nerve impingement can often be helped.

Chiropractic is also a preventative therapy and can greatly improve the body's overall health and wellbeing. Regular check ups are recommended to ensure that the body maintains a healthy balance. Remember, you don't have to be sick to feel better!

Reactions to Treatment

During a course of treatment physical changes can occur as the muscles, soft tissues and the skeleton are realigned. These changes may include a brief period of stiffness, soreness, tiredness and the occasional muzzy head. Sometimes you can feel worse before there is an improvement, although often there is a feeling of relief and wellbeing. It is important that you rest as much as possible for forty eight hours, especially after the first treatment, to allow the musculo-skeletal structure to settle down.

The aim of a course of treatment is to help the body to align itself, thereby restoring correct nerve function, and reducing muscle tension resulting in improved health.

The McTimoney Chiropractors are Sue Weller, Allyn Edwards and Alaine Skerrett.
